We (1 M, 1 F) met at a queer sex party so ours is not the traditional story. Marriage means to us: 1) I moved into my partner's rent-stabilized apartment in Manhattan (and the only way one can get on that kind of lease is through marriage) and 2) I had health insurance through my job and she didn't.

(Alas — we were not allowed anything like a civil partnership or would have done so.) Our tax accountant would have approved this as a win win — and otherwise we would have just continued living in sin.

And so, while we were on our way to Burning Man in 2013, we stopped our van at the Chapel of The Bells in Reno and had the ceremeony performed while we sat in our rented van. The day before we found a $50-off coupon on line, so that was nice.

They did not say "til death do us part" but rather "from this day forward". Being ethical sluts we also appreciated that "excluding all others" was omitted.

To us it was a bit of theater with some legal footnotes.
