If I were teaching a journalism class (not likely, but being a fiction writer I like to imagine) I would have the class deconstruct the New York Times front page — pulling apart the various biases just barely below the surface, exploring the varieties of propaganda, and the slick methods used to manufacture consent. It's all there — daily!

I remain amazed that people can read that stuff as objective "news" on which they anchor their world views. Thank goodness for the few individuals with critical-thinking skills unimpaired who can be found in the comments sections.
