Horror To Humor — Early Pandemic Writings/Art

Seven Pieces ~ March to June 2020

“I live in New York City. There’s a horror movie playing outside on the big screen. They’ve locked the theaters doors so we’re in here for the duration. Even the ticket seller can’t tell us how long this feature runs.
I want to talk about being scared.”

— from Through A Harlem Window, Darkly ~Witnessing the Unspeakable

As the sirens outside raged, I wrote and made art.

Through A Harlem Window, Darkly ~ Witnessing the Unspeakable

“Will this event be a serious enough wallop to shake off some of of the tribal animosities — and create permanent fissures in that system of Greed, as well as the monsters it creates and sustains. Can the tools that have maintained such stark inequality be permanently damaged — allowing healthcare and education to be elevated to rights not driven by the bottom line?”

Covid-33 ~ A Love Letter From Intensive Care

“These past three weeks, with fluorescents overhead, and sick people all around, have been difficult. One wants to either recover or depart quickly. The sense of panic has been minimal and the loving care quite amazing — so glad the one in 2020 didn’t get me. But quite honestly, when they try to serve me up some Hope along with my lemon Jello they both taste completely artificial.”

Pinocchio-20 ~ The Nose Knows

“After months of peer reviewed research and evaluation with follow-up polygraph testing it has been conclusively confirmed that the virus attacks in response to physiological indicators that the host is in the act of deception.”

Ahoy! Man Overboard!
Nautical Metaphors, Bobbing Amidst A Pandemic

“— Ah, but the Bad Ship Corona was tossed through the air
Smashed into the harbor and capsized the fleet
— even what some claimed an exceptional vessel
the proud, the chosen, USS Empire.”
