As a bisexual queer man making my way through the gender policed world it seems that armpit hair, parthly becaus it shows up in fast glances is a bit more acceptable than hair on women's legs — which cretes seismic gender reaction. My personal experience as a man not very comfortable with the outrageously strict rules of male gender presentation — male enforced, sometimes dangerously — has been to my painted toenails, including dramatic recoil from gay men. But then again that sphere of "uniformed " gay men is where I've also gotten weird reachtion to having long hair. I sense that most women and men slip into the roles indoctrinated as young people. and get comfortbale with the constant reinforcements of fitting in. Beyond gender. the world conspires to apply roles and groupthink to so many other realms of living.
Sad.
